Homestead Valley Community Council preps for Flamingo Heights glamping appeal

Locals face off with landowner over development

"One of the developers proposing to build a campsite with a store, restaurant and bar on about 25 acres in Flamingo Heights faced an unhappy crowd at a meeting held Monday, Aug. 15, in Yucca Mesa.

Steve Botthof and his project manager, Nancy Ferguson, presented their plans at the Homestead Valley Community Council. Several locals told them they did not want the development in their community."

HOMESTEAD VALLEY GROUP HOSTS Q&A SESSION ON PROPOSED CAMPGROUND

There was an overflow crowd at Monday’s meeting (August 15) of the Homestead Valley Community Council at the Yucca Mesa Community Center. The monthly meetings feature informational reports from County, State, and Federal representatives, as well as Law Enforcement, and Fire agencies. This one saw a bigger draw because the developers of a controversial private campground proposal had agreed to come and respond to local concerns.

Captain to retire from sheriff's department

"Capt. Lucas Niles will retire July 28 after 20 years with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. Niles, who has headed the Morongo Basin Sheriff’s Station since March 2020, announced his retirement at a Homestead Valley Community Council meeting Monday, July 18."

"After he made his monthly presentation to the Homestead Valley Community Council Monday afternoon, council President Jim Harvey presented him with a wooden plaque. Showing a desert landscape and the San Bernardino County sheriff’s seal. The plaque was inscribed with his name and the words, “Always Homestead Valley’s Captain.”

A Resolution Approved By The Homestead Valley Community Council Supports Local, State, And Federal Law Enforcement -

From the HVCC resolution: "HVCC rejects all calls to defund local, county, and state law enforcement agencies and instead calls for increased funding to counter the misguided and dangerous policies by lawmakers of no bail, mass jail release, and decriminalization that have made us all less safe." San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon sent HVCC a personal letter of appreciation.
